The Chicago Board of Education continuously strives to promote high educational standards and advance the academic achievement of its students. In order to ensure every CPS elementary student is on track and prepared for success in the next grade level and beyond, the Board provides standards for the promotion and retention of students through its Elementary School Promotion Policy (Board Policy 07-0926-PO1). Effective this school year, a new writing requirement has been added to the promotion criteria for 8th grade students.
In order to attain promotion to the next grade, students must meet or exceed the following requirements:
- District-Wide Assessment (DWA) scores in reading and math at or above the 24th percentile.
- Final report card grades in reading and math of “C” or better.
- No more than nine days of unexcused absences.
- Final report card grade in writing of “C” or better or passing score on the District-Wide Writing Assessment (8th grade students only).
CPS urges parents to closely monitor their child’s academic progress and attendance record to ensure he or she stays on track throughout the school year. Parents can assist their child in meeting the promotion criteria by reviewing homework assignments with him or her, requesting to see quizzes and tests, and maintaining communication with their child’s school and teacher with regards to his or her academic progress.
Students who do not satisfy the promotion criteria above will be required to attend and satisfactorily complete Summer School (which could consist of Summer Bridge and/or Summer Writing Workshop (if applicable)) in order to attain promotion to the next grade.
